Should I text him?

Yes, if you want to talk to him. Texting first is fine. What matters is the pattern. If you always text first and he rarely does, you've learned something about how much effort he's putting in.

Should I text him first?

Yes, now and then. Texting first doesn't make you desperate. If it's always you, though, try waiting a day or two and see whether he reaches out.

Should I text him, yes or no?

Text him if you have something to say, if you'd send a friend the same thing, and if a slow reply wouldn't upset you.

Wait if you've sent the last 2 or 3 messages, if you're texting to find out whether he still cares, or if you'd check your phone every few minutes for his reply.

He hasn't texted me in 3 days. Should I text him?

One message is fine, as long as it's light and easy to answer. For example:

Hey, hope your week's going okay. I was thinking about you.

If he replies warmly, good. If he doesn't reply, wait. You've already said what you wanted to say.

Should I double text?

Once is fine if your first message was easy to miss. Twice in a row with no reply is usually where it starts to hurt more than it helps.

Should I text him goodnight if he hasn't replied?

Probably not. If he hasn't answered your last message, sending goodnight too puts more pressure on both of you. Let him reply first.

If you nearly always text first

Be honest with yourself. Do you keep doing it because you enjoy it, or because you're scared of what happens if you stop?
