How to stop overthinking in a relationship

Overthinking is going over the same worry again and again without getting any new information. To stop, write down what actually happened, keep it apart from what you're afraid it means, and then talk to him about the part that still bothers you.

Am I overthinking, or is something wrong?

Ask yourself 2 questions. Has anything actually changed in how he treats you? And would a friend reading the same messages be worried too? If the answer to both is no, you're probably overthinking. If something really has changed, take that feeling seriously.

Why do I keep overthinking my relationship?

It's usually a sign that you're unsure about something. It gets worse if you've been hurt before, or if you don't know where you stand.

5 things that help

  1. Write down what happened, in plain facts. He replied 6 hours later is a fact. He's losing interest is a guess.
  2. Give it a time limit. Let yourself think about it for 10 minutes, then do something else.
  3. Stop rereading old messages for clues.
  4. Look at the pattern over weeks, not one day.
  5. If something still bothers you the next day, ask him kindly.

How to talk to him about it

A calm, honest question works better than hints. For example:

I've noticed I've been overthinking things lately, and I'd rather just ask you. Are we okay?

Can overthinking ruin a relationship?

It can, if it turns into checking his phone, accusing him or needing reassurance every day. If you notice it early and talk about it, it usually doesn't get that far.
